Special thanks to Zul’s Burger for extending this food review invitation.
Update: This business has ceased its operations.
Kompleks Lebuh Nipah is a food complex near Vistana Hotel at Bukit Jambul. Apart from Xiang Yun Vegetarian Hut which operates during the daytime, there are also several stalls that are open till late night.
Zul’s Burger is one such stalls. The proprietor, Mr. Zul, claims to have the largest burger in Penang – 11 inches diameter to be exact. I guess he only refers to stalls that sell burgers on regular basis, not including one-off record-breaking events.
The idea of super-sized burgers was result of a boastful challenge to a competitor, who claimed that Mr. Zul imitated his 8-inch burger. Not willing to put up with such accusation and in the true spirit of one-upmanship, Mr. Zul rolled out his gigantic 11-inch burgers.
Do not be intimidated by these colossal burgers. The menu also includes regular-sized burgers for the mere mortals. You (mere mortals) should be able to get a decent meal for under RM10.00. But if competitive eating is your forte, raise the stakes all the way to the Burger Kebab (RM40.00)!
So huge are the burger buns that few bakeries are willing to supply them. Zul’s Burger only has one supplier, who only agreed provided that Mr. Zul sponsors the molding rings.
For tonight’s food tasting event for 4 persons, Mr. Zul prepared the Burger P5 (RM30.00) which is typically meant for 4 to 6 persons. The mass (not “weight”, to be scientifically correct) is approximately 3 kilograms when fully loaded.
To put the size into perspective, here is the comparison with a hand. Then again, everyone’s hands have different sizes, so this is not a good metric.
Alternatively, we can use standard-sized objects like 50, 20 and 10 sen coins.
This is how the burger looks like when the upper bun is removed. The patty is not a single piece, but actually consists of numerous bite-sized chicken chunks. Chicken can be substituted with beef if you desire so.
The other ingredients in this giant burger are sausages, onions, shredded cabbage, lettuce leaves, sweet corn, green peas and carrots. Condiments used are mayonnaise, barbecue sauce and tomato ketchup. Cheese powder is sometimes used but not for the burger today.
What’s the best way to consume such a freakishly humongous burger? We opted to slice it cross-sectionally into four quarters. Here is how it looks with a quarter removed.
And here is how a quarter slice looks like. I think most guys should have no problem eating this in a single seating. But to challenge the entire burger using one mouth – this is a totally different story! Perhaps I should?
