Phaik Laksa

Update: This business has ceased its operations.

Phaik Laksa (碧叻沙) is a small eatery at the corner of Jalan Seang Tek and Jalan Krian. Admittedly, it is the shop’s unusual facade that attracted my attention.

As the name implies, Laksa (叻沙, RM4.00) is the restaurant’s signature dish. Laksa is served with spicy broth that contains fish and tamarind. Thick rice noodle is used.

Other key ingredients are torch ginger (姜花), cucumber, shallots, bird’s eye chili (小辣椒) and mint leaves. Most people also like to add shrimp paste (虾膏) to Laksa for the savory taste.

As for side orders, I ordered a Prawn Cracker (虾饼, RM0.50) and a Spring Roll (春卷, RM0.80). The snacks are not particularly special. But for such low prices, they are certainly worthwhile.

Finally, Jelly Ice (爱玉冰, RM3.00) is a dessert made of shaved ice, fig jelly (爱玉子), nata de coco, lychee and lemons. The dessert’s refreshing taste makes it a great thirst quencher.

The food taste at Phaik Laksa is commendable. The same can be said for affordability. I am looking forward to tasting Hokkien Mee (福建面) and Yam Rice (芋头饭) on my next visit.
