Penang Street

Penang Street (老街) is a small restaurant at Automall. Like other eateries at this level, it is an open-air restaurant. Penang Street serves bak kut teh (肉骨茶) and other Chinese stir-fried dishes. According to the staff, this family business used to operate at Penang Street (Lebuh Penang).

The Bak Kut Teh here is served in a claypot. The standard portion for 1 person costs RM16.00. There are also larger portions for more people. Rice needs to be ordered separately for RM1.50 per bowl. In my opinion, the soup is not sufficiently flavorful and lacks the bitter-sweet herbal taste.

Meanwhile, the pork is mostly lean meat with few fatty sections. This makes the pork quite tough to chew. Other ingredients in the claypot are pork meatballs, tofu skin (豆腐皮), enoki mushrooms (金针菇) and leaf lettuce (油麦).
