Burgers & Bites is the sole restaurant inside Century Bay Private Residence. It is located at Level 2, adjacent to the koi pond. This eatery is also where in-house guests are served breakfast in the morning.

Burgers & Bites has a modest menu which covers burgers, hot dogs and other finger foods. Drinks include espresso coffee and hot chocolate. Meanwhile, bottled beer and draft beer only cost RM12.00 each for the entire day.

The gas-fueled barbecue grill is where most of the action takes place. The Salmon Burger (RM20.00) consists of a salmon fillet sandwiched in a burger bun. Also included are lettuce, cheese, mayonnaise and ketchup. Side dishes are rocket salad and French fries.

Each serving of Grill Chicken Wings (RM12.00) contains three pieces. The wings are basted with tangy-and-spicy sauce, and then barbecued until they turn golden brown. This snack goes particularly well with beer.

As for drinks, the Iced Chocolate (RM7.00) gives a strong taste of cocoa. Make sure that you stir well before drinking!

Burgers & Bites is open to walk-in customers. Pork is not served in the restaurant.

Update: This business has ceased its operations.

De Mahsuri Garden is a Malay restaurant in Bayan Baru. Operating for 2 weeks, this open-air eatery used to be the location of Original Mami Nasi Kandar. One of the proprietors here used to operate Spoof Burger at The CEO.

Spoof Burger’s menu is still available. Several new burgers have been added since my last visit. A recent addition is Burger Leleh 2.0 (RM15.90), which is an enhancement of the original Burger Leleh. The most striking aspect of this burger is a fork that appears to be suspended in the air. The fork is connected to the burger by a tower of solidified cheese. A mixture of mozzarella and cheddar cheese is used to achieve the required consistency. By the way, the Malay word “leleh” means “drooling”.

Meanwhile, the burger patty is either deboned chicken thigh or ground beef. The patty is flavored with sweet-tangy dressing based on barbecue sauce. On the side are coleslaw and a heap of shoestring fries drizzled with nacho cheese.

As for snacks, the serving of Nachos (RM7.90) comprises of fried corn tortilla chips topped with Bolognese sauce, ground chicken, black olives, celery and grated cheese. This snack is meant to be shared among 2 or 3 people.

De Mahsuri Garden also serves Western grills, pasta, finger food and local delights. The restaurant will be bringing in more stalls in the near future. Eventually, the place will also be open for breakfast and lunch.

Bao Culture https://jillteo.com/2016/10/bao-culture/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=bao-culture Sun, 23 Oct 2016 05:00:00 +0000 https://jillteo.com/2016/10/bao-culture/ Special thanks to Bao Culture for extending this food review invitation.

Update: This business has ceased its operations.

Automall is a lifestyle mall with around two dozen food establishments. One of these eateries is Bao Culture Food And Drink, which is located directly above Macau Street and U Desserts.

Taking an elevation position has benefits. The open-air concept of Bao Culture takes advantage of cooling breeze from the sea. With favorable weather, one enjoys scenic views of the Penang Strait and the mainland on the horizon.

The restaurant design is inspired by food trucks, a concept which the proprietor picked up during her visit to Europe. The ordering kiosk is modeled after a beachfront juice bar, while the kitchen resembles a mobile trailer. Both structures are custom-built for their respective purposes – not refurbished from actual ones.

At Bao Culture, the seating arrangement is free and easy. Card games, rocking horses and bicycles are provided for customers to pass time. It is also interesting to see several wooden tables that have been made from former prison doors.

As the name implies, the main specialty at Bao Culture is the creative use of baozi (包子), or more accurately, mantou (馒头, meat buns). Each piece of mantou is cut open and filled with a type of meat (5 choices) and sauce (7 choices).

Mantou can either be steamed, fried or toasted. Made from leavened wheat flour, the bread is fluffy and very easy on the mouth. Meanwhile, the sauces used at Bao Culture are all prepared from scratch.

Customers can choose any combination of mantou, meat and sauce. There are several harmonic combinations though. For example, Grilled Chicken Bao (RM15.00) goes well with fried mantou and teriyaki sauce. Sweet-savory teriyaki glaze accentuates the juicy nature of grilled chicken thigh, while fried mantou provides lovely crispiness. Also included are a slice of cheese, lettuce and tomatoes.

Deep-Fried Chicken Bao (RM15.00) goes well with toasted (actually it’s pan-fried) mantou because their firmness are closer to each other. Spicy mayonnaise is used as dressing. The dressing is not too spicy – just about right for me. I do think that a sprinkle of pepper can improve this sandwich even further.

If poultry is not your cup of tea, Deep-Fried Fish (RM15.00) may be a sound idea. The fillet is made from tilapia, which is a good choice given its scrumptious flavor and texture. Wasabi mayonnaise tantalizes the tongue with a mild degree of pungency. The fillet works well with steamed mantou, which is the original form that most people are accustomed to.

Bao Culture’s menu also includes a handful of pasta dishes. My order of Carbonara (RM16.00) turns out to be an excellent choice! Spaghetti is coated with mouth-watering sauce made from egg, cheese and butter. Although creamy, the sauce is not excessively thick that it becomes surfeiting. Furthermore, the plate of Carbonara is enhanced by succulent pork belly slices.

Moving on to beverages, Coffee Latte (RM8.00) is prepared from espresso and steamed milk. The espresso may be on the bitter end of the spectrum for most people, but I personally prefer bitterness over sweetness for my coffee. Nevertheless, sugar is available upon request.

Snowy Ice Blended Chocolate (RM15.00) is a new drink on the menu. I like the lingering bitter-sweet taste of chocolate on my palate. Whipped cream is added on top.

Another newly-introduced drink is Vanilla Milk Shake (RM12.00). I think the shake is on the sweet side of my liking. Then again, it is very difficult to find the “sweet spot” (pun intended) that works for everyone. Instead, it may be better to allow customers to customize their preferred level of sweetness.

Overall, Bao Culture is a nice place to visit if you are looking for snacks or light meals. The airy ambience is also an alternate place to hang out instead of air-conditioned settings. Bao Culture is also a kid-friendly eatery as there are several forms of entertainment to keep the little ones occupied.

Terlioq Pasta Sandwich https://jillteo.com/2016/09/terlioq-pasta-sandwich/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=terlioq-pasta-sandwich Thu, 15 Sep 2016 12:00:00 +0000 https://jillteo.com/2016/09/terlioq-pasta-sandwich/ Kompleks Penjaja Desiran Tanjung is relatively deserted compared to nearby places such as Fettes Park, Precinct 10 and Vantage Desiran Tanjung This is probably due to the food court’s remote location in Tanjung Tokong. Besides Roti Bakar Kacang Phool Penang which I covered during my previous visit, there is another stall called Terlioq Pasta Sandwich. Inspired by American and European cooking, its menu consists of a handful of options for pasta, sandwich and snack.

California Chicken Club (RM10.00) is a recommended dish here. The ciabatta bread is fantastic indeed; it has been a while since I came across such delicious ciabatta. The bread’s texture is sufficiently firm but not too tough, providing excellent mouthfeel when bitten into. Its aroma is pretty appealing too.

Sandwiched between halves of a ciabatta bread, the crispy fried chicken is delectable indeed. Also included in the sandwich are chicken ham, fresh tomatoes, lettuce, cheddar cheese, tomato sauce and mayonnaise. The ingredients are largely fresh, making the California Chicken Club quite affordable when quality is taken into consideration.

Optionally, an order of onion rings is available for an additional RM4.00. I feel that onion rings are slightly dry; perhaps they should be cooked more briefly. Tomato sauce and delta sauce are provided. The latter is made from mayonnaise, lemon juice and paprika, and was popularized by an American fast food chain, Popeyes.

Fatboys’ Kitchen https://jillteo.com/2016/05/fatboys-kitchen/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=fatboys-kitchen Sat, 14 May 2016 10:00:00 +0000 https://jillteo.com/2016/05/fatboys-kitchen/ Special thanks to Fatboys’ Kitchen for extending this food review invitation.

Update: This business has ceased its operations.

I used to visit Khoon Hiang Cafe (群香茶室) regularly when Ah Leng Char Koay Teow (亚龙炒粿条) operated here. However several years ago, Ah Leng has moved to Restoran Tong Hooi (东园茶餐室) just across the road.

Khoon Hiang Cafe was also the original location of Dayumm Burger. Although Dayumm Burger no longer operates here, Fatboys’ Kitchen is making this place its home now. In fact, Fatboys’ Kitchen is the rightful successor of Dayumm Burger, albeit under a new management team.

At Fatboys’ Kitchen, each patty packs 120 grams of genuine pork, which is satisfying enough for most people. The proportion of lean versus fatty meats is finely tuned to give the ideal mouthfeel that loyal customers of Dayumm Burger have enjoyed.

Fatboys’ Kitchen uses an infrared grill for cooking. Although cooking gas is the fuel source, it is only used to heat ceramic tiles. In turn, the tiles produce infrared radiation which cooks food. This method of cooking food is considerably healthier because fire does not make direct contact with food.

First-timers to Fatboys’ Kitchen should start from the Complete (RM11.00) burger. The constituents of this burger are pork patty, smoked bacon, fried egg, molten cheese, button mushrooms and iceberg lettuce – all sandwiched between two halves of a wholemeal raisin bun. Thousand Island dressing is used to improve flavor, although I personally prefer minimal sauce such that pork takes the center stage.

Aspiring gluttons can go for the supersized burgers: Ultimate (double ingredients) or Godzilla (quadruple ingredients). So far, several customers have opted for these monster portions on regular basis. Are you ready to take up the challenge?

If you just want to enjoy pork and nothing else, order some Meatballs instead. Each order comes in either 6 pieces (RM7.00) or 12 pieces (RM12.00). Similar to the pork patty, the Meatballs are succulent on their own. The Meatballs are topped with tomato and Thousand Island sauces. It would be nice if the sauces were poured on the side, as some people prefer less sauce or no sauce at all.

As for customers who prefer something less sloppy, the Wrap (RM5.00) is a viable option too. Folded in tortilla bread are grilled pork and other ingredients similar to the burger. Surprisingly, I find that the tortilla bread works pretty well with pork and its accompanying sauces.

From time to time, Fatboys’ Kitchen introduces special dishes to gauge customers’ response. Today’s special is Lemongrass Chicken Burger, where the chicken chop is flavored by lemongrass juice. The aroma of this burger is welcoming, but it is the succulent juiciness of chicken chop which truly shines. I think this burger should be able to gain mainstream acceptance.

As a fan of pork burgers, I am impressed with Fatboys’ Kitchen as much I was with Dayumm Burger before. Whereas countless similar businesses have come and gone, the fact that Fatboys’ Kitchen perseveres is attributed to the fact that the stall holds on to its core values: genuine pork, no gimmicks.

Bouncy Food https://jillteo.com/2015/11/bouncy-food/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=bouncy-food Mon, 09 Nov 2015 13:00:00 +0000 https://jillteo.com/2015/11/bouncy-food/ Update: This business has ceased its operations.

Bouncy Food is a burger eatery at Bayan Baru, several houses away from 888 Hokkien Mee (888福建面). There is no air-conditioning here, but fortunately Bouncy Food is only open in the evenings.

Bouncy Food is the first burger joint in Penang to use two-step cooking processes for patties: smoking and grilling. Actually there are three processes if we include brief searing in between. The kitchen uses a grill instead of a griddle. This avoid oily deposits from accumulating, which can make the meat surfeiting.

My choice for dinner is the Ultimatum (RM18.00). The choice of meat is beef, pork or chicken; I chose the former. The beef is made from double-ground sirloin from Australia. The patty is seasoned with spices, which explains why it is reasonably succulent.

Another prominent ingredient is a whole portobello mushroom, lightly grilled to preserve its natural moisture. I must say that the enormous mushroom helps to accentuate the savoriness of beef. Also included in this gigantic burger are pork bacon, beef strips, sunny-side-up egg and cheddar cheese. Cheese sauce and balsamic vinaigrette are kept minimal to allow the beef patty to take the center stage.

The burger ingredients are sandwiched between two halves of a charcoal bun. Although most ingredients including meat patties are prepared in-house, charcoal buns are sourced from a local bakery instead.

For side orders, the Wild Mushroom Soup (RM6.00) is made from fresh mushrooms. This is evident from its “coarse” consistency. The soup has balanced flavor but I think it can use more salt. Meanwhile, the slice of garlic bread has nice aroma. However, I would have enjoyed it more if it were not as hard.

Truffle Fries (RM6.00) are fried twice, first with regular cooking oil and then with truffle oil. Truffle oil is expensive, so only a small amount is used. Although the aroma from truffle oil is welcoming, I think the fries lack flavor. Some kind of dipping sauce would be nice.

On the other hand, Paprika Fries (RM6.00) do not require condiments as they have been sprinkled with paprika powder and lime juice. Mild spiciness makes the fries quite addictive.

As for desserts, the Bouncy Mud Cake (RM6.00) is steam baked to maintain its moisture. Made from genuine dark chocolate, cocoa manifests itself as bitter aftertaste. Much to my delight, a small amount of mint produces cooling sensation afterwards. I think the coating of chocolate syrup is unnecessary as I prefer to enjoy the bold flavor of dark chocolate directly.

To cater the wider spectrum of customers, Bouncy Food also has Fish Head Noodles (鱼头米粉) on the menu. According to the proprietor, recommended soups for noodles are clear soup (清汤) and milky soup (牛奶汤).

I think Bouncy Food certainly knows its way around burgers. I am satisfied with its succulent burgers, especially in the presence of portobello mushroom. However, the pricing is quite high due to costly ingredients and lengthy cooking process. It remains to be seen whether the local dining crowd appreciates superior burgers and is willing to patronize this eatery regularly.

Sigi’s Bar & Grill https://jillteo.com/2015/07/sigis-bar-grill-5/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=sigis-bar-grill-5 Thu, 09 Jul 2015 12:00:00 +0000 https://jillteo.com/2015/07/sigis-bar-grill-5/ Special thanks to Golden Sands Resort for extending this food review invitation.

Although Martin Yan’s filming at Golden Sands Resort has concluded two months ago, it is always a pleasure to pay another visit to this seaside resort at Batu Ferringhi.

Sigi’s Bar & Grill On The Beach is one of the two eateries at Golden Sands Resort. Whether to grab a cool drink after an exhilarating day at the seaside, or to enjoy a wholesome meal in an ambient setting, this restaurant is a popular destination for many holidaymakers.

Since last month, Sigi’s Bar & Grill has been featuring a limited-time Burger Mania menu. Five different types of burgers are available, giving diners a wide variety of patty choices such as beef, lamb, chicken and fish. Each order of these American-sized burgers includes a glass of carbonated beverage.

The meal this evening starts with the SBG Smoked Salmon Caesar Salad (RM44.00). Juicy romaine lettuce is tossed with garlic-flavored croutons, light Caesar dressing and grated parmesan cheese. In addition, two succulent pieces of smoked salmon provide salty appeal to this delightful appetizer.

Moving on to burgers, one of the most popular ones is the Charcoal Bread Burger (RM50.00). As the name implies, toasted charcoal bun is the main highlight of this burger. Served on the side are lightly-salted nachos chips.

Sandwiched within the charcoal bun is 200 grams of ground beef patty. As I sink my teeth into the beef, I can feel the genuine taste of meaty goodness. For such a large patty, the charcoal bun appears inadequate by contrast. I think the charcoal bun should be made thicker for more balanced taste.

Other ingredients in this delectable burger are bacon, mozzarella cheese, iceberg lettuce and tomato. BBQ sauce, tomato ketchup and garlic aioli are used as condiments.

Throughout the month of August 2015, the Durian Cheese Chicken Burger (RM45.00) will be available too. This burger uses a sesame bun which I feel is arguably nicer than the charcoal bun. Once again, crispy nachos chips are provided on the side.

What makes this burger stand out among its peers is the patty itself. Packing 200 grams of chicken breast, this wholesome patty is stuffed with thick paste made from durian and Philadelphia cream cheese. As I puncture the patty, hot durian-cheese paste oozes out in a tantalizing manner.

As far as palate is concerned, I think that chicken flavor still plays the dominant role. If durian were to take the center stage, the paste needs to be made thicker. The use of cream cheese with durian is not the best marriage; I recommend another type of cheese with sticky consistency, such that the durian-cheese paste forms better bond with meat patty.

Tonight’s burger tasting session serves to seek our feedback, so that Sigi’s Bar & Grill can fine-tune the recipe before actual introduction of this burger next month. Executive Chef Adrian Lim has taken note of our comments and suggestions.

Warm Durian Butter Cake (RM23.00) is served as tonight’s dessert. The taste of durian is mild in order not to overwhelm the taste buds. On the side is a scoop of vanilla ice cream with a piece of chocolate shard, whipped cream, chocolate syrup and fresh strawberry. This treat is usually served at Garden Cafe, the other eatery at Golden Sands Resort.

As for drinks, Ginger and Orange Mojito (RM16.00) is a mocktail made from ginger beer, orange slices, mint sprigs, lime wedges and cane sugar. Its fizzy and tangy sensation makes this beverage an ideal choice to quench thirst.

Burger Bakar Kaw Kaw https://jillteo.com/2015/03/burger-bakar-kaw-kaw/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=burger-bakar-kaw-kaw Sun, 29 Mar 2015 11:00:00 +0000 https://jillteo.com/2015/03/burger-bakar-kaw-kaw/ Burger Bakar Kaw Kaw has several outlets around Klang Valley, but this family business started at this roadside stall in Wangsa Maju Seksyen 2.

There are 3 types of meats here: chicken, beef and lamb. In addition, there are several variations which differ in terms of ingredients like bacon and ham. For each type, it is also possible to opt for single, double or even triple patties!

The Cheezy Turkeynizer (RM18.00) consists of two chicken patties, a turkey ham and a slice of cheese. The patties are deep-fried in a coating of crispy batter. In terms of taste, the chicken patties are reasonably succulent, but not the best that I have tasted.

Next is Cheezy Baconizer (RM18.00) which includes two beef patties, strips of beef bacon and cheese. Unfortunately, I feel that the beef is not as well seasoned as it should be.

Last but not last, the Cheezy Turkeynizer (RM22.50) contains two lamb patties, turkey ham and cheese. I find that lamb to be most enjoyable meat overall, thanks to its strong flavor and mild spiciness from seasoning.

Burger Bakar Kaw Kaw uses burger buns strewn with oats. Due to liberal amount of cheesy sauce, the burgers appear sloppy. Be prepared to get your hands dirty!

I feel that Burger Bakar Kaw Kaw is an acceptable place to visit, although I don’t think it is a great place for regular meals. The burgers may be pricey, but I think the pricing is justified by the large size of each patty. Personally, I recommend the lamb patty above other meats.

The stall is named after the home stadium of Manchester United, of which the stall operator is obviously a fan.

The Mix Special Burger (RM8.00) is the ultimate choice with all ingredients: chicken patty, beef patty, hot dog sausage, fried egg and cheese. I am dismayed that the burger is prepared in a sloppy manner.

Coconut Shake (RM4.00) is a blend of coconut water and vanilla ice cream. The drink contains coconut flesh and flavored tapioca pearls too. The overall taste is dominated by vanilla ice cream. I think coconut should take the center stage instead.

Old Trafford Burger is probably an acceptable spot for a quick bite. But apart from its unique theme, the burgers are not particularly special. Food preparation is also awfully slow: even with only 3 customers ahead of me, the stall took nearly 30 minutes to prepare my order!

Marshall’s Burger https://jillteo.com/2015/01/marshalls-burger/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=marshalls-burger Wed, 14 Jan 2015 11:00:00 +0000 https://jillteo.com/2015/01/marshalls-burger/ Special thanks to Marshall’s Burger for extending this food review invitation.

Update: This business has ceased its operations.

Today’s dinner brings me back to Marshall’s Burger at Bay Avenue. Two things have transpired since my last visit. Firstly, the facade signboard has been renamed from “Marshall’s” to “Marshall’s Burger”. This should eliminate confusion among people who are unfamiliar with Marshall’s nature of business.

Secondly and equally noteworthy, operation of this Bay Avenue outlet has been delegated to a franchisee starting this month. I guess it doesn’t really matter to customers as long as they can still experience the same quality of food, service and atmosphere. Note: The Tanjung Bungah outlet is still being operated by the franchisor.

The interior décor remains largely unchanged. Plywood-top tables and solid stools are arranged neatly against red and gray backdrop of Marshall’s Burger.

Like before, the food menu at Marshall’s Burger is organized into four main categories: pork, beef, chicken and fish. Each category is tiered with different combinations of patties, cheddar cheese and pork bacon.

At Marshall’s Burger, pork and beef patties are prepared in-house. Absolutely no filler is used.

Each à la carte burger can be upgraded to a set meal for an additional RM6.50. The set meal includes a side of fries and a choice of carbonated beverage. Fries can be substituted with onion rings at no additional cost. It is great to see that Hot Wings is still available.

My visit today is primarily to review three new burgers which Marshall’s Burger is rolling out this month: Oozee Piggy, Cheezee Cow and Greedee Chic. Each of these new burgers contains a slice of cheddar cheese and a bacon strip. These burgers (à la carte price of RM12.80) serve as a compromise between a slice of cheddar cheese (RM11.80) and two bacon strips (RM12.80). Previously, customers have to choose in between. Now everyone can have both!

The Oozee Piggy is the standard-issue single pork patty burger, now with enhanced goodness from both cheese and bacon. The pork patty packs 140 grams of ground pork, making this a respectable meal not to be toyed with. This burger is served with iceberg lettuce, onion and tomato. Pork burgers are Marshall’s bestsellers. It is also unsurprising that they are my personal favorite too.

Customers who prefer bovine over swine (as food, not at the petting farm) can try the all-new Cheezee Cow. The single beef patty carries 160 grams of awesome juiciness. Like the previous burger, it is served with cheddar cheese, bacon strip, iceberg lettuce, onion and tomato. The texture of beef is coarser than pork but arguably more “solid”.

If poultry is your cup of tea, the new Greedee Chic may appeal to your palate. This burger includes a piece of chicken thigh cutlet, a slice of cheddar cheese, a bacon strip, coleslaw salad and tomato. The chicken flesh is tender and most flavorful. Certainly the meat is well-marinated and well-cooked.

For set meals, the fries used is steak fries, i.e. fries with thicker cuts and is often served with steak. The drink is either carbonated beverage or Dasani bottled water. Marshall’s Burger has introduced hot drinks recently: Milo (RM3.80), Mocha (RM3.50) and White Coffee (RM3.50). However, these drinks are not available as part of regular set meals.

Marshall’s Burger has several on-going offers to appeal to price-savvy customers. Marshall’s Hour is from 3:00pm to 6:00pm daily. A set meal (from a selected list of burgers including the three new ones) is offered at RM14.00. For an additional RM1.00, the carbonated drink can be substituted with a hot drink.

For a quick bite during lunch break, Marshall’s Set Lunch is available from 12:00pm to 3:00pm on weekdays. Each set meal (including any of the three new burgers) is available for only RM15.80. Under normal circumstances, food is usually served under 10 minutes.

If you feel too inconvenient to travel to Marshall’s Burger, let your food travel to you! Powered by Deliver Eat, the delivery menu includes any à la carte or set meals, but not special offers like Marshall’s Hour or Marshall’s Set Lunch.

One noteworthy observation is that Marshall’s Burger puts heavy focus on customer satisfaction. If you want to experience how good customer service feels like, Marshall’s Burger is a role model.
