Today’s program brings us to Tournament Players Club (TPC) Kuala Lumpur, formerly known as Kuala Lumpur Golf & Country Club. Perched on the idyllic Bukit Kiara, this prestigious country club is surrounded by rolling lawns and lush greenery.

The beautifully landscaped golf course comprises of the 18-hole East Course (par 71) and 18-hole West Course (par 72). Both courses meet the highest standard of PGA, and are among the most acclaimed ones in Asia. Over the years, TPC Kuala Lumpur has hosted international tournaments such as the PGA Tour, PGA European Tour and LPGA Tour.

The villa-style clubhouse provides facilities such as swimming pools, tennis courts, driving range, fitness center, karaoke lounge, golf pro shop and more. As for club members with children, TPC Kuala Lumpur has a recreational amenities like bowling alley, games room and mini theater to keep the young ones entertained at all times.

TPC Kuala Lumpur has several food outlets, all of which are open to the public. Located at the West Lobby, the Golfer’s Terrace serves as the country club’s all-day dining restaurant. The food menu here covers a variety of local delights and Western dishes.

Unlike other eateries in TPC Kuala Lumpur, the Golfer’s Terrace is directly operated by the clubhouse. The main dining area has air-conditioned and al fresco dining sections. There is also a bar area which affords panoramic views of the West Course.

Roti Canai (RM6.25) is one of popular dishes on the breakfast menu, which is typically served between 6:30am and 11:00am daily. The dough for Roti Canai is kneaded, flattened and folded repeatedly so that it becomes flaky when cooked. The crispy flatbread is served with dhal and chicken curry.

Rojak Petis (RM19.50) comprises of jicama (sengkuang), pineapples, cucumbers, bean sprouts, tofu, water spinach (kangkung) and crushed peanuts. The ingredients are tossed with freshly made petis udang, a savory paste made of shrimps, tamarind and chili peppers.

Diners who prefer Western cuisine can opt for Carbonara Pasta (RM32.40). The spaghetti dish is served with streaky beef, mushrooms, fried bread and egg cream sauce. The homemade sauce is made less creamy in order to suit the local palate.

In an interesting twist to the classic Italian dessert, the Soy Panna Cotta is made of soy milk instead of cream. The sweet custard is served with fresh strawberries, strawberry sauce and chocolate curls.

For the month of February 2020, Golfer’s Terrace is rolling out Nasi Tomato & Ayam Masak Merah Set (RM29.90++). This popular Malay dish uses rice infused with tomato purée, which is blended from fresh tomatoes. Also served on the banana leaf are ayam masak merah (tomato-flavored chicken), dalcha (vegetable stew), acar jelatah (pickled vegetable salad), papadum (black gram crackers) and cashew nuts.

Ayam Masak Merah is thoroughly marinated with spices, making the meat succulent to the last morsel. The chicken thigh is braised with tomato sauce, dried chili peppers, terung pipit (pea eggplant), onions and spices. Meanwhile, acar jelatah serves to cleanse the palate after a satisfying meal.

The weather is usually hot and sunny during February 2020. In response, Golfer’s Terrace is serving Pineapple Lemonade (RM12.00++) and Pineapple Sunrise (RM12.00++) month-long to keep one’s body cool and rejuvenated throughout the day.

Golfer’s Terrace does not cut corners when it comes to food quality. To ensure that all dishes have the “homemade” touch, virtually all ingredients are prepared from scratch in the kitchen. The food portions are also quite generous; a single serving is largely sufficient for most people.

Spice Market Café is the all-day dining restaurant in Rasa Sayang Resort & Spa. The eatery’s name reflects the fact that Penang stands at the crossroads of the maritime spice trade. Upon entering the restaurant, visitors are welcomed by a spice boutique where various spices are sold by weight.

The main dining section of the restaurant is air-conditioned. On each table is a stone mortar filled with aromatic spices like star anise, nutmeg and cinnamon. Meanwhile, customers who prefer to enjoy fresh air can be seated at the patio. Smoking is prohibited though.

The à la carte menu at Spice Market Café covers a wide range of local favorites and international fare. As soon as we are seated, we are served crackers and mango chutney.

Our meal begins with Rasa Fish And Chip (RM48.00), a “Rooted in Nature” dish. French fries are served on the side. Accompanying condiments are tartar sauce, ketchup and malt vinegar.

Char Koay Teow (RM42.00) is perhaps the most iconic dish in Penang. In this dish, flat rice noodle is stir-fried with prawns, squids, eggs, bean sprouts, garlic chives, soy sauce and chili paste. Char Koay Teow is best enjoyed while steaming hot.

As for drinks, Café Latte (RM18.00) can be served hot or iced. Each glass contains 2 shots of espresso. The sweetness of steamed milk complements the coffee’s bold flavor.

Besides à la carte dishes, Spice Market Café serves International Buffet Dinner every Sunday to Thursday. On Friday and Saturday, the restaurant offers See Food Seafood Buffet Dinner. Spice Market Café is also where in-house guests have breakfast in the morning.

Morganfield’s https://jillteo.com/2019/10/morganfields/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=morganfields Tue, 08 Oct 2019 12:00:00 +0000 https://jillteo.com/2019/10/morganfields/ Special thanks to Morganfield’s for extending this food review invitation.

We are having dinner at Morganfield’s this evening. Dubbed Home of Sticky Bones, the American-style grill house is located at the Ground Floor of Queensbay Mall.

In the spirit of Oktoberfest, Morganfield’s is having the Porktoberfest (portmanteau of “pork” and “Oktoberfest”) menu for one month. The restaurant is decorated with streamers to welcome this festive season.

A platter of Porktober-Feast (RM219.95) consists of crispy pork knuckle, baby back ribs, signature Morganfield’s sausages, bratwursts, pancetta, red skin mashed potatoes, French fries, garden veggies and garden salad. The feast is meant for 4 or 5 people. Morganfield’s also offers the Mini Porktober-Feast (RM129.95) for 2 to 3 persons.

Crispy pork knuckle (schweinshaxe) is roasted until the skin is crispy. I personally feel the skin is too hard to my liking; a lighter crisp will certainly help. The pork knuckle is served with sauerkraut and bacon onion gravy.

Meanwhile, Balinese-style baby back ribs are basted with spicy Oriental spices. The ribs are quite tender and juicy, making them succulent indeed. A squeeze of lemon juice helps to accentuate the flavorful pork.

Morganfield’s is known for stuffing its own sausages. There are several types, two of which are served today. Herby Hog is generally the crowd favorite, while Spicy Devil has a spicier flavor that appeals to some. Also included is a pair of German bratwursts.

Smoked pancetta ham is taken from the pork belly. Lean meat and fat complement each other harmoniously. The ham is charbroiled with grill marks and has the right doneness.

In conjunction with Oktoberfest, Morganfield’s is rolling out limited edition beer steins. The design is different from last year. Each mug is sold for RM54.95 including any beer of customer’s choice. The beer stein can also be purchased on its own for RM29.95.

The Porktoberfest menu is available for the entire month of October 2019. For both Porktober-Feast and Mini Porktober-Feast platters, get 20% discount when you visit Morganfield’s between 5:00pm and 8:00pm. Furthermore, the Queensbay Mall outlet is having an Oktoberfest party on the evening of 25 October 2019. There will be beer-drinking and sausage-eating competitions where the winner gets a year’s supply of Sticky Bones!

Nenda’s Kitchen https://jillteo.com/2019/10/nendas-kitchen/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=nendas-kitchen Mon, 07 Oct 2019 04:00:00 +0000 https://jillteo.com/2019/10/nendas-kitchen/ Special thanks to Nenda’s Kitchen for extending this food review invitation.

Update: This business has ceased its operations.

Nenda’s Kitchen is a new Western restaurant at Kampung Jawa. It occupies the former premises of Kitchen Chemistry. The restaurant entrance faces the main road leading to Phase 4 of Bayan Lepas Free Industrial Zone.

Nenda’s Kitchen is operated by the same management as David Brown’s on Penang Hill. Like Kitchen Chemistry, Nenda’s Kitchen focuses on Western dishes with elements of Asian cooking. To cater for all customers, Nenda’s Kitchen does not serve pork.

Hawaiian Chicken Chop (RM15.50) was a crowd favorite back during Kitchen Chemistry, so Nenda’s Kitchen is continuing this tradition. The pan-fried chicken is topped with sweet pineapple ring and a slice of cheddar cheese. Side dishes are homemade mashed potatoes, grilled tomato and garden salad.

The next dish is Cajun Glazed Pan-Seared Seabass Fillet (RM26.50). Wild-caught sea bass is seasoned with rustic Louisiana-style seasonings, which explains why the fish skin is absolutely scrumptious. The fillet is served with orange-flavored mayonnaise.

Nenda’s Rempah Banana Leaf Fish Fillet (RM26.50) is one of the bestselling dishes on the menu. The grilled sea bass is topped with a spicy relish, which I think is the main appeal of this dish. Pickled onion mayonnaise is also provided, but I prefer to enjoy the spicy fish without additional condiments.

Chicken Patty Spaghetti Marinara (RM16.50) is the best way to appreciate the savory taste of fresh tomatoes. The dish comes with three juicy chicken patties, where each piece seasoned and grilled to perfection. Al dente spaghetti is topped with parmesan cheese and basil leaves too.

Seafood Spaghetti Aglio-Olio (RM16.50) is sautéed with garlic, dried chili and olive oil. The classic pasta dish comes with fresh prawns and clams. Shimeji mushrooms, baby spinach and cherry tomatoes also lend their juiciness.

The chef’s signature dish is Nenda’s Laksa Fish Burger (RM16.50). Sandwiched in a toasted bun is a breaded fish patty with asam laksa condiments like tamarind. Fries and garden salad are served on the side. David Brown’s also serves a similar burger but uses sea bass instead of dory fish.

Last but not least, Penang Nasi Lemak (RM15.00) comes with spiced fried chicken, poached egg and other typical nasi lemak ingredients. The rice is infused with coconut milk and bunga telang (butterfly-pea flowers); the latter gives the rice a distinctive blue color. However, it is the unique blend of sambal (chili paste) that provides the main appeal of this dish.

During lunchtime, customers can add RM8.00 to supplement the meal with soup, iced lemon tea and ice cream. As for dinner, diners may top up RM15.00 to enjoy a special appetizer, soup and handcrafted dessert. Hold on to your receipt because Nenda’s Kitchen gives 10% rebate during your next visit!

Nenda’s Kitchen prepares all sauces from scratch. In spite of this, the restaurant manages to keep food prices reasonably affordable. As a result, Nenda’s Kitchen is quite popular among employees of nearby factories. In the evening and on Saturdays, the restaurant’s homestyle recipes makes it a great choice for family-style dining.

Mezza9 is the main restaurant of Iconic Hotel. The eatery is located on the Mezzanine Floor, which is also reflected in its name. Mezza9 serves a wide range of dishes from local favorites to Western dishes. I am reviewing the restaurant’s à la carte menu this evening.

Luxury Fried Rice (RM28.00+) is a dish of Chinese-style fried rice with eggs, mixed vegetables and diced sausages. The meal comes with deep-fried chicken rolls, fried battered prawns, fried egg, fish crackers and acar (pickled vegetables).

Next, Chicken Satay (RM13.00+ for 6 pieces) is marinated with spices including turmeric, making the chicken very flavorful indeed. Chicken Satay goes well with peanut sauce. Nasi impit (pressed rice), onions and sliced cucumber are served on the side.

Fruity Paradise (RM17.90+) is a refreshing blend of banana, apple, watermelon and vanilla ice cream. A watermelon wedge and mint leaves are added for aesthetic appeal.

Mezza9’s à la carte menu is served between 11:00am and 11:00pm every day. In addition, Mezza9 offers Lunch Munch from 12:00pm to 2:30pm daily. Meanwhile, the Fisherman’s Hook Seafood Buffet is served on every Friday and Saturday evening.

Nomad is the latest restaurant in Icon City. The eatery is adjacent to CO- and below CoHere co-working space, all of which are under the same management. Nomad specializes in life food such as poke bowls. The restaurant is called “Nomad” because the chef is constantly exploring new gastronomical experiences.

The restaurant adopts minimalist décor in its dining hall. Wooden surfaces give the eatery a rustic yet casual ambience. The food counter is where poke bowls and drinks are prepared. Meanwhile, live potted plants breathe life into the spacious restaurant.

Nomad has additional dining space at the mezzanine. This secluded section is meant for customers who need a quiet place to dine. The mezzanine floor may be used for private functions for up to 25 people.

Poke is a Hawaiian rice bowl that typically contains raw fish. Nomad allows customers to customize their poke bowls. A typical meal comprises of the protein, 1 type of grain, 5 vegetables or fruits, 2 dressings and 2 garnishes.

I opted for smoked salmon, quinoa, frisée, red cabbage, avocado, jalapeño, nori (seaweeds), ponzu sauce, wasabi aioli, togarashi (Japanese chili peppers) and flaxseeds. The price depends on the choice of protein. For instance, my bowl of smoked salmon pole bowl is priced at RM15.90.

As for all-day brunch, Truffle Omelette (RM20.00) is a crostino-like dish served on freshly baked rye bread. Besides poached egg, the bread is also topped with creamy sautéed mushrooms, frisée and red endive. Balsamic reduction and truffle oil serve as seasonings.

Kam Hiong Prawn Spaghetti (RM25.00) is a fusion of Italian pasta with Asian-style spices. Al dente pasta is dressed with an aromatic sauce that is usually associated with stir-fried Chinese dishes. The dish is served with succulent prawns.

As for beverages, Nomad covers espresso-based coffee, ice-blended drinks and fruit juices. Shown here are Caffè Latte (RM10.90) and Orange Juice (RM10.00).

Nomad insists on preparing all poke toppings and sauces from scratch in the kitchen. Compared to other poke restaurants, Nomad places greater emphasis on innovative ingredients. First-time customers can always seek the staff’s advice on what ingredients complement one another.

Roselle https://jillteo.com/2019/09/roselle-2/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=roselle-2 Fri, 13 Sep 2019 04:00:00 +0000 https://jillteo.com/2019/09/roselle-2/ Special thanks to Lexis Suites Penang for extending this food review invitation.

Roselle Coffee House is the all-day dining restaurant in Lexis Suites Penang. Located at the Mezzanine Floor, the restaurant is where in-house guests have breakfast in the morning. Roselle also serves a wide range of local and international dishes throughout the day.

Penang Char Koay Teow (RM28.00) is perhaps the state’s most iconic dish. Using flat rice noodle, Penang Char Koay Teow is stir-fried with prawns, crab meat, bean sprouts, garlic chives and eggs. This dish is best enjoyed while it is steaming hot from the wok.

Since Lexis Suites has a sizeable proportion of Middle Eastern guests, Roselle offers a full-fledged menu of popular Arab dishes. The hotel also hired two Middle Eastern chefs to ensure that the recipes are truly authentic.

Mixed Grill (RM65.00), or shish kebab, consists of skewered grilled meats like lamb, chicken and fish. The platter also comes with pita bread, French fries, Arab salad, toum (garlic sauce), onions, cherry tomatoes and a large chili pepper. One way to enjoy this dish is by rolling some meat and garlic sauce in pita bread.

Roselle has recently introduced Jumbo Black Gourmet Burger (RM35.00). For the patty, diners have a choice of either chicken or beef. In any case, the supersized patty is grilled to perfection and is satisfying indeed.

Also sandwiched between charcoal brioche buns are fried egg, tomatoes, cucumbers, lettuce and cheese. A sprinkle of gold dust gives the burger an opulent appearance. In addition, French fries and salad are served on the side.

As for drinks, today’s caffeine intake comes from a cup of Cappuccino (RM12.00). Prepared from espresso and steamed milk, the coffee is topped with milk foam and cocoa powder. The drink comes with a crispy butter cookie too.

Most dishes in Roselle’s à la carte menu are also available in the hotel’s 24-hour in-room dining menu. Furthermore, Roselle Coffee House serves Ocean Delight’s Seafood Fiesta Buffet every Saturday evening.

Morganfield’s https://jillteo.com/2019/08/morganfields-2/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=morganfields-2 Fri, 23 Aug 2019 11:00:00 +0000 https://jillteo.com/2019/08/morganfields-2/ Special thanks to Morganfield’s for extending this food review invitation.

Morganfield’s, Home of Sticky Bones, is an American-themed restaurant that specializes in chargrilled pork ribs. We visited the outlet in Queensbay Mall today.

The restaurant’s main dining area is air-conditioned. Wooden tables and brick walls present a rustic atmosphere reminiscent of the American South. Alternatively, customers can opt for al fresco dining next to the bar. Smoking is now prohibited throughout the restaurant.

Morganfield’s celebrates its 8th anniversary this month. In conjunction with National Day celebration, customers who order a main dish can get any Small Plate (side dish) for only RM9.95 (normally priced between RM11.95 and RM25.95). This promotion runs from 30 August 2019 to 1 September 2019 and is available in all Malaysian outlets.

For the purpose of today’s food tasting, we are focusing on Small Plates exclusively. The succulent Grilled Chicken Yakitory starts off on the right foot. The two skewers of marinated chicken thigh are grilled to perfection, and then covered in salsa fresca and sesame seeds.

Balinese Style Baby Back Ribs is another recommended dish. It is seasoned with a blend of pungent spices. The pork ribs are tender and mouthwatering too.

Salted Egg Chicken Thigh is my favorite dish on the Small Plates menu. Bite-size chicken chunks are coated with salted egg paste, and then deep-fried to golden crispiness. The snack is served over mesclun salad.

As for something meatless, go for Sautéed Eryngii & Button Mushrooms. Cooked with garlic butter, the mushroom slices are sprinkled with parmesan cheese and spring onions. I appreciate the unique texture of mushrooms.

Mr. Calamari is the perfect choice for children. This snack is essentially deep-fried squids coated with tempura-like batter. The squids are meant to be dipped in marinara sauce. A squeeze lemon juice is recommended.

Flat Bread comes with three choices of topping: smoked salmon, smoked duck and tomato basil. We opted for smoked duck. Other toppings are feta cheese, cherry tomatoes, oranges and frisée.

Morganfield’s is famous for stuffing its own sausages. If you have enjoyed them in the past, the Grilled Spiral Sausage is a good choice. The bratwurst is quite salty because it is meant to go with beer. The dish comes with cherry tomatoes, green olives, cornichons (pickled gherkins) and arugula.

Moving on, sautéed Luncheon Meat & Potato Sticks are meant for sharing around the table. This finger food is tossed with spicy tomato sauce, so it may not be the ideal choice for children.

Lastly, Cajun Butter Pork Steak is marinated with mustard and Cajun spices. The steak is then grilled and cut into bite-size pieces. I think the steak is too tough and chewy for my liking.

Morganfield’s beverage menu is wide-ranging indeed. Today I ordered a mocktail called Agua Fresca (RM15.95). The thirst-quenching drink is prepared from watermelon juice with a dash of lime juice and rose syrup. Floating on the top are watermelon chunks and a scoop of calamansi sorbet.

Candlelight Set Dinner https://jillteo.com/2019/08/candlelight-set-dinner/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=candlelight-set-dinner Wed, 07 Aug 2019 12:00:00 +0000 https://jillteo.com/2019/08/candlelight-set-dinner/ This article is part of my 2019 Cameron Highlands trip series.

Special thanks to Copthorne Cameron Highlands for extending this food review invitation.

During our stay at Copthorne Cameron Highlands, we have the pleasure of experiencing the hotel’s 5-course candlelight dinner. The menu is personally crafted by Executive Chef Khor, whose area of expertise is Western cuisine.

The candlelight dinner is typically served at 18° Celsius Cafe. A fancy table is set next to the fireplace for a romantic effect. Dinner can also be served at the Cricket Lounge upon request. The scenery just outside Cricket Lounge is idyllic indeed.

Fruit punch is served as soon as we are seated. Baguette and bread rolls are also provided to keep the appetite up. At Copthorne Cameron Highlands, the pastries are baked in-house to ensure freshness.

The first course is spicy chicken salad with green apples, Italian chicory and ice plant. Ice plant has tiny water sacs on its surface that resemble frozen dew. The vegetable is mildly salty since the plant accumulates salt from the soil. Ice plant is now grown in several farms in Cameron Highlands. You can purchase this vegetable at Kea Farm Market next to the hotel.

The next delicacy is French onion soup. The soup has a fairly strong taste and serves to heighten one’s taste buds. Also served is a slice of cheese-crusted baguette.

Next, the slushy strawberry sorbet is meant to cleanse the palate before the main course. Garnished with fresh strawberries, the sorbet’s fruity sweetness is absolutely gratifying.

There are several choices for the main dish. The lamb shank is a good choice of red meat. The lamb is braised au jus with spices such as cardamom; the thick gravy helps to suppress the lamb’s strong smell. On the side is a hearty serving of mixed vegetables and mashed potatoes.

Should you prefer seafood, grilled salmon is a good choice. Two succulent salmon fillets, seared with grill marks, are served with creamy Hollandaise sauce. This dish comes with mixed vegetables and mashed potatoes too.

This evening’s dessert is a large serving of chocolate cake. The cake is decorated with chopped nuts, butter and chocolate curls, chocolate sauce and a strawberry. If you love the rich taste of cocoa, the chocolate cake is certainly your cup of tea.

As per tradition, the course meal ends with a hot drink of diners’ choice. We opted for Americano and hot chocolate.
